Normally, I love Colbert. But from Toby Keith's Have I Got a Present for You to Willie Nelson's offering weed to the Baby Jesus, this one missed the mark. While it was classic Colbert, getting right to the heart of the problem, it felt a bit empty. Maybe it was too over the top. Or maybe giving Jesus weed is just too much. Or maybe the whole thing was just too painful to watch. I nearly turned off Meet the Parents for this reason. If he redeemed it later, I missed it.

Here's Toby Keith. Is he in on the joke? Given songs like Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue, I wonder.

I saw this "Hard Core Jesus Freak" bumper sticker, only the one I saw was in color. Direct and blatant rip of Harley Davidson. What I love is the watermark on this sticker available on eBay. "Do not copy"? Are you serious? What exactly was it you did again?

Three reasons I hate this painting:

1. This ritual is something Jesus did for his disciples, not just every one. It was an intimate moment that included just his disciples, even if one was a traitor. But it wasn't with Romans or Pharisees or anyone else. It was for disciples.

2. It implies that Jesus serves the nations. He does not. The rulers are to bow to him, not the other way around. Usually I'm for portraying Jesus as a servant. But this comes off differently.

3. It could have been so much better. With primaries in full swing, I've gotten to the end of my rope with "God Bless America". This could have been a painting of how Jesus is Lord of Lords and King of Kings.
Yes, the footwashing was a call for the disciples to be servants. But again, it's to the disciples. Again, it is debatable how many are in this picture.

One reason I love this picture. German Chancellor Angela Merkel has the same look on her face as she did here.

So, this site isn't all about stuff that misuses God's name. It's also about the stuff that we find really beautiful that does take God's name in a meaningful, powerful way. Derek Webb is one of today's best artists, Christian or no.

Some might say that Webb's music is depressing. In light of a lot of "Christian music", I would call him genuine.

I took this picture while driving the other day. (Yeah, sorry for the quality.) I hate the fact that we've co-opted Calvin to do everything for us. But despite the infringement, I still think this one is clever.

For those who don't have super-resolution pixel-defining eyeballs, it has Calvin kneeling before a cross and says, "Lord, forgive me for peeing on everything." Also note that the license plate number starts with "666."

This may be the product I most thing of when I think of this blog. I found this devotional in our church library and checked it out. I proceeded to keep it so that no one else would read it.

Yes, there are some good ones. "I love you, I love you, I love you. —God" or "Let's talk. —God" are a beautiful way of capturing God's heart.

But honestly, I can't see how someone ever thought God some of this stuff. "Big Bang Theory, you've got to be kidding. —God" and "Keep using my name in vain, I’ll make rush hour longer. —God" are prime examples of why people avoid Christians like we were lepers. Yes, they're catchy. Yes, they get peoples attention. But so are naked women. This kind of quick, punchy, sloppy evangelism says to people that God is more about being right than he his about resurrecting the world from the death that people experience every single day. At best, it's misguided, a true example of making God in our own modern, evangelical, American image.

When you squeeze it, it paraphrases Bible stories down to the awkwardly extracted moral. How great!

A couple of highlights:
Luke 15: Your life matters so much to me.
Matthew 19:25-27: There are some things that people cannot do, but God can do anything.

The only thing missing are some quote marks "in" weird places.
